Google’s Game for Creating Virtual Clay Sculptures

Google’s Arts and Culture platform offers an educational entertainment platform for learning about history. With the use of technology and 3D simulation, Google has developed interactive games to entertain people of all ages interested in learning. The «3D Pottery» platform was designed by the company to facilitate people’s curiosity about sculpture art in different expressions throughout human history.

In this game, users must fulfill a series of challenges to pass different levels. All of them consist of sculpting with clay in 3D, creating a variety of bowls from different periods. There is no timer, so each person can take the time they want to create their customized version and paint it with their preferred style. Even if the final result does not exactly match Google’s reference, each level can be repeated as many times as desired.

To access this game, users must go to Google’s «Arts and Culture» page, «artsandculture.google.com,» and type in the name of the game: «3D Pottery,» in the search bar located at the top right with a magnifying glass icon. Then press the «Play» button to start the game.

At the beginning of each game, users will only have a single option from which to create a 3D clay bowl for their basis. Though there are a total of six designs, each belonging to different cultures and periods of human civilizations, which get unlocked as the user advances in the game. Some of the remaining cultures include the Inca, located in ancient Peru, and some mesoamerican cultures located in the north of the American continent.

To start creating, click on the «Recreate this pot» button. This will take people to a new screen that will display a simulated version of a 3D vase, which they will have to imitate.

The games start with a ball of clay that rotates as if it were located on a pottery wheel, with an arrow-shaped cursor on top. It will create a basic shape of a bowl on which it can make various modifications before giving it the desired shape. Unlike real clay sculpture, the game does not waste clay, so if the desired shape starts to present different characters, the player can start the sculpting process again. As there is no timer, the game does not pressure users, so they can focus on producing their piece patiently.

After completing the process and having the vase with a personalized style or based on the model, the next step is to place the handles depending on the model that you have and your preferences. Finally, paint will be added to the simulated vessel before proceeding to «dry» the clay to convert it into ceramics. With this, the process will be complete, and the level of similarity with the model presented will be revealed.

At the bottom of the screen, Google will also offer a collection of data related to the culture to which the original vessel belongs, along with a map indicating its exact location, and the purpose it served in history.
