Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders’ third baseman, Andrés Chaparro, might not have the best batting average early in the season, but he is making headlines with his power. Chaparro hit two home runs last Friday, bringing his total up to six, and ranking him among the top three home run leaders in all of Minor League Baseball.
Despite his team’s 13-7 loss to the Syracuse Mets, Chaparro proved that he can make a valuable contribution during this stage of the campaign and help lead his team to the championship. In the game, Chaparro went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, as well as a strikeout. Prior to yesterday’s game, the Venezuelan infielder held a .163 batting average with 49 official at-bats.
The other two home run leaders in the league are the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s center fielder, Peyton Burdick, who has a .327 average, and the Syracuse shortstop Ronny Mauricio, who is batting an impressive .380. Chaparro’s power, however, has made him a contender for the home run title, and fans are eagerly watching to see who will take the crown as the season progresses.
